EFSA completes full risk assessment on aspartame and concludes it is safe at current levels of exposure

December 12, 2013

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) released its position reconfirming the safety of aspartame at current levels. The opinion comes after a rigorous review of available scientific research on aspartame. In its statement EFSA said: “This opinion represents one of the most comprehensive risk assessments of aspartame ever undertaken.”

The decision reiterates long-standing positions from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the American Heart Association, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and the American Diabetes Association.

This new assessment on aspartame gives people even greater confidence in this ingredient’s safety and benefits. No- and low-calorie sweeteners offer people a way to manage their calories while still enjoying the sweet taste they love.
